Mario Blom

 
As a student Mario Blom kept Killifish and Cichlids for his hobby, and therefore met with fish disease, and thus developped his own medication. No wonder after his graduation in 1972 he was the first practicing veterinarian of fish disease in the Netherlands.

Colombo

 
From fish disease only Dr Blom couldn't make a living, so he had to have a general veterinarian practice with domestic and farm animals as well as some ornamental fish importers on his books. These specially developed medications for Ornamental fish importers worked so well, they requested consumer packaging. Mario Blom therefore started the firm Colombo and Colombo ltd. presented in 1984 is first consumerline at The dibevo, the Dutch Pet & Aquatic trade show.

Koi

 
Soon after that Colombo was a well known name for the trade and consumer. The strong growth in the pond and Koi business has been a welcome challenge. On the first Koi show in Arcen Holland was a Colombo presentation, and in 1994 the first patients were treated in the fish hospital.

First Dutch Fishhospital

 
The establishment of the First Dutch Fish hospital received a lot of attention from the media and international press.
On invitation from a dutch news network Colombo participated on the World Trade Show and won an invitation to an international show in Singapore.

Afterwards Mario Blom regulary appeared on Television Shows in the Netherlands and Germany, where in front of camera's surgical operations on Koi were performed. For better understanding of fish disease Mario Blom held lectures for aquarium and pond clubs. In the Fish hospital courses were given for the trade, and thus many aquarium and pond experts got their training in this facility. Even now Mario Blom is still working as a trainer for Dutch insititutes.

Takeover

 
Since production, legislation, marketing and distribution became more and more complicated over the years where only big firms could survive Mario Blom has decided at the beginning 2000 to find a take over for Colombo ltd. As per 2001 Colombo ltd. is now part of the Aquadistri group, where several wholesale and production companies are united.

As Aquarium and Pond circumstances and environments differ strongly, there is for each circumstance it's own line of product. Colombo Cerpofor ® First Dutch Fish hospital is especially developped for use in the aquarium; Colombo Morenicol First Dutch Fish Hospital is especially for pond use. Besides medication several water treatment products were issued under the Colombo label. Products as water developer, bacteria cultures, filters start, anti algea, all developed by the veterinarian for the sole (1) purpose, making fish keeping a success!
